Illustrations and infographics
2017-2020 – illustrations, infographics

Commissioned by Tappan

To make a large amount of information insightful and attractive, a so-called visual report is often ideal. A report like this is a visual representation of a story or message. It is often used as a starting point for the conversation, to clarify objectives or make a process transparent.

Magazine Grof Geschut
2018 – book design, print management

In employment with Tappan

A unique operation took place along the Lekkanaal in 2017; the relocation of a number of objects from the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. They had to make way for the widening of the canal and the construction of the 3rd chamber of the Princess Beatrix lock. To preserve the special history of our national defense at this location, the objects have been placed back in the landscape as ‘found objects’.

To look back on this operation and on the history of this piece of the Waterlinie, the magazine Grof Geschut has been published. A nice reminder of this large and unique operation.

Several wayfinding projects
2015 – 2017 – wayfinding, maps

In employment with Groeneveld Sign Systems

Effective wayfinding not only ensures users are able to orient, it also provides guidance and resources to help them feel at ease in the area and reach their destination. Providing the right amount of information at the right time and location is crucial to reach those goals. A wayfinding designer is responsible for enhancing the experience of a space by creating order in the offered information.

2016 – UI & UX design

In employment with Groeneveld Sign Systems

The redesigned website of Groeneveld Sign Systems is distinctive yet recognizable. A fresh color and lots of white space in combination with a typeface with a large clarity, complemented by clear photographs which shows the work optimally. Finally, the tagline ‘clear in wayfinding’ is being supported by the complete identity.

A Set of Icons
2016 – icons, wayfinding

A set of icons that support the work done by words is one of the elements in wayfinding that deliver information to its user. Icons support the verbal description of a service or serve as a stand alone message. Certain characteristics can be absorbed in order to fit an icon in its surroundings.

print management

Commissioned by Schwandt Infographics

In 2015, the new board of the Rekenkamercommise Rijnland was selected. The leaving members of the board said ‘good-bye’ in style with a gift for the new board: a reference book with fact sheets about the investigations and decisions made between the years 2007 and 2015.

Since 2007 the Rijnland District Water Control Board is advised and researched by the Rekenkamercommissie (RKC) with the aim of controlling the Rijnland better and more transparent.

Samengevat
2013 – book, illustrations, infographics

This internship report is about every aspect of my time at Ontwerpwerk. In three months I gathered information about the company, colleagues, habits, schedules, treats, projects, music and more.

Juna
2013 – typedesign

This characteristic typeface is inspired by a highly illustrated ‘Chi Ro’ monogram from the Book of Kells, written around the year 800 A.D. Juna consists of regular & semi-bold, both variants contain lowercase, uppercase, punctuation marks, numbers and accents. Regular also contains ligatures.

Homeless in The Hague
2012 – book, infographics, map

In collaboration with Jasper Terra

What happens when you suddenly become homeless in The Hague? Where do you need to go and what will happen in the future? Which organisations will help you? This atlas gives insight into the facilities that can provide food, a place to sleep, medical care and so on.

W. A. Dwiggins
2012 – book, typography, binding

A reprint of ‘A Technique For Dealing With Artists’, written by William Addison Dwiggins in 1941. The text is a essay/pamphlet which contains 12 chapters and 39 propositions. Due to the fact of Noordzij teaching for 30 years at the KABK and both he and Dwiggins being a typedesigner, I added quotations of Noordzij to each chapter.

Time-lapse
2011 – book, infographic, poster, illustration

Three months of my dreams gathered into a book. The tags (classified in locations, feelings and persons) of the dreams are summarized in an overview in the back of the book. The cover is a poster with all the locations which occur in the dreams.

About

Hi! I’m Jolien Verduijn, a graphic designer with a fascination for information design. During the study Graphic Design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague I specialised in typography, information- and book design. My work is characterized by detailed typography, (experimental) type design and strong aesthetic visualisations.

While studying I started as an independent graphic designer, working in both commercial and cultural fields as well as defining my own assignments. Nowadays i’m a designer at Things To Make And Do where my work mainly consists of translating complex issues and processes into a clear visual message. I ask questions, bring out the core, give advice and convince.
